A project ‘United Against Hate Speech’ (3-12 June 2019) took place in a picturesque town in the south-west of North Macedonia called Struga. Participants came from six countries- Turkey, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Italy, North Macedonia and Poland. The main aim of the project, hosted by NGO ‘Next Generation’ from North Macedonia, was to find an effective way to tackle both online and offline hate speech.

First of all, we had possibilities to develop our skills in a multinational environment. In the beginning we took part in team building activities in order to get to know each other, and to be aware of our strengths and challenges during the project. Moreover, we gained new connections and perspectives for our future actions.

After that, we expanded our knowledge about topics such as discrimination, social exclusion, freedom of speech, etc. Furthermore, we discussed positive and negative effects of different types of media. Then, we talked about stereotypes in our countries, and we had a chance to compare the views with those of others. We spoke freely about our opinions in an open debate, as well as defined key words related to both online and offline hate speech, subsequently forming definitions.

Our final task was to come up with campaigns sharing a motive #UnitedAgainstHateSpeech, that were shared by each team, and later presented to the local community using a different type of tools and communication channels.

Apart from theme activities we had an opportunity to visit the centres of Struga as well as Ohrid located nearby. Both towns have their own charm and we had a nice time strolling around, sightseeing and swimming in the Ohrid lake, yet most importantly, to work on the campaigns, mentioned above, engaging the local citizens. We also visited the local NGO ‘Poraka Nova’ which improves the quality of life of people with intellectual disabilities and their families. As the only organization specialising in this field in Struga, it played a crucial role in fighting against discrimination of mentally challenged persons in the past 15 years.

Finally, we participated in intercultural evenings, promoting our countries along with breaking various stereotypes in a funny way.  During the free time we enjoyed ourselves organizing bonfires, dancing, singing songs and discovering other cultures as well as learning some basic phrases in different languages.

Now, that our time in Struga came to an end, we are already looking forward to team reunions, meetings all over the world, and most importantly, next Erasmus+ projects.
